Is it okay for me to talk about my abusive dad in my college essay?

My dad has never been there for me emotionally, and he has verbally abused me since I was young. Don’t get me wrong, he has done nice things for me, but ever since I can remember, we have never got along. For my UC application, the prompt is "Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations" Is it okay to talk about how my abusive dad has shaped me into someone stronger? He has pushed me to pursue my passion of becoming a veterinarian. I have been volunteering with animal rescue since I was 14 as a way to escape from the pressure/issues of my life. I’ve been very involved with rescue and I have been down to Tijuana many times to assist in rescuing animals. What I’m trying to ask is, is it okay for me to talk about these types of things in my college essay? Thank you for your input.

If How Could You? brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because the composite story of millions of formerly owned pets who die each year in American and Canadian animal shelters. Please use the essay to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelters and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay and neuter campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals. Thank you.
